Approximately one out of every seven people entering the hospital needs blood. Whether it is due to a pre-existing condition, an emergency accident, or an upcoming surgery, blood is a key component to the success of many procedures. Without donations, it would be impossible to complete many life-saving tasks, since there is no substitute for blood. Donating blood is an easy yet significant act, so anyone who is able should donate blood, since blood donations make a world of difference in many people’s lives. Blood donation is the voluntary process of having one’s own blood drawn and then transferred to another in need of the blood (Mayo). There are many instances that call for the need of blood. Although about 40% of Americans are eligible to donate, â€Å"less than 10% actually donate† (Donate Blood). There is an increasing shortage of blood supply due to lack of donations, as well as the fact that â€Å"40,000 pints of blood are used each day in the United States† (Donate Blood). A significant factor in the lack of donations is the negative perception on the part of donors. Due to the constant need for blood, testing and screening have advanced so as to reduce risks to a donor. Many precautions are taken to ensure safety and to prevent any issues from arising, thus donating is safe for everyone. There are height and weight requirements for donors. Similarly, before the donation begins, an in-depth medical history interview takes place. It is necessary for the safety of the donor and recipient for the blood to be tested prior to donating. Also, iron levels are tested to ensure the donor will recover quickly and efficiently. Materials used while gathering blood are sterile and only used once (General Donation Facts).
